We launched the design studio in 2011, launching a new publication every 45 days. We now have a staff of about 75 designers who design 15 daily papers throughout the Northeast. Asbury Park Press cover by Suzy Palma; The Journal News front by Joanne Sosangelis; and Democrat & Chronicle food front by David Anesta.
PERSONAL WORK
Recent work is a series based on iPhone images I have been collecting over the last few years. This yet to be titled piece is taken from various visits to Ocean Grove beach, 8" x 80".
SUN SENTINEL 2005-10
As creative director at the Sun Sentinel, I managed photography, design and graphics for print, online and TV. Examples here by David Anesta, Chris Mihal, and Nuri Ducassi.
ARIZONA REPUBLIC 2003-05
I managed news design and graphics at the Arizona Republic. There I learned to be a better editor and to navigate a large organization. Here are a couple prototypes we produced for the redesign, produced while working with Chris Kozlowski and Tracy Collins.
SUN JOURNAL 1997-03
One of my first newspaper jobs, where I managed visuals for the paper. My early newspaper foundation came from Lucie Lacava, who helped me redesign the paper. It wasn't always the most sophisticated work, but we drove readership up in an area with declining population – by having fun.
CAMERAWORKS GALLERY 1985-95
Amy and I bought an old camera shop and converted it to a gallery/studio. It was a great place to raise our kids. We sold our own hand-printed gallery prints and produced photographs for editorial and advertising. Harbor Lights, Catawba Island and The Quarry Boat, Marblehead.
SIDESHOW BANNERS 1978-88
I worked toward my photography degree at The Cleveland Institute of Art by painting circus sideshow banners. There were only a few artists in the country doing this work, which continued for about ten years. These banners ended up in galleries as well as the midway. The Human Blockhead, 7' x 8' canvas..
CLEVELAND INSTITUTE OF ART
We had eight photo majors and four faculty for a 5-year program. What could be better? I was fortunate to stay on a couple years to work with students and manage the darkrooms and studio. Boby's Fireworks, Oxford, Maine.
